Refugee Support

When a young man arrived in Australia in 2009 as a refugee from his homeland, the troubled African nation of Burundi, he began to attend our church.   Having found that his brothers had also escaped from Burundi and were living as refugees in Uganda, he wanted to do all he could to assist them and the wider community of Burundian refugees in the city of Kampala.   Members of our church began to be involved, and our support for these people has grown and is now our main activity.   We currently sponsor about 30 children to attend schools throughout Kampala, and we are supporting a medical centre, staffed by Burundian volunteer doctors who can converse with refugees in their own language and where refugees can have consultations free of charge.   We have provided funds for micro-loans to these refugees so that they can start their own small businesses.   Humanitarian needs, such as food and housing, are also supported to the extent we are able.   Our reserves are slowly dwindling, and we must seek new funding sources to maintain some level of care for these desperate people extending into the future.   The personal relationships that have grown are also valuable.   Their coordinator wrote to us in 2016, “All that is possible is all that can be.   We Know that you love us.”   Those personal benefits flow in both directions.

The Burundian refugee community in Kampala continues to suffer from COVID-19 restrictions, and some of the business start-ups we have supported are struggling as a result, but there are encouraging signs.
